The emergence of Litecoin and alternate cryptocurrencies (altcoins) using GPU-friendly algorithms sparked an explosion in graphics cards being used for mining numerous new cryptocurrencies.

Ethereum’s launch in 2015 and shift to GPU-centric Ethhash mining extended this trend. Zcash, Monero, Dash, and other altcoins further drove demand for AMD and Nvidia’s top GPUs for mining.

Modern Innovations Maintain Relevance of GPU Mining

While the 2013-2014 rise of application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips temporarily reduced GPU relevance for Bitcoin mining, graphics cards remained widely used for mining altcoins.

To resist domination by ASICs, many altcoins incorporated “ASIC-resistant” algorithms which favored GPUs, keeping them at the forefront for cryptocurrencies like Ethereum.

Today, despite innovations like ASICs and FPGAs, GPUs continue to thrive for mining certain coins. Newer, more powerful cards like Nvidia’s RTX 3090 boast hash rates unimaginable during Bitcoin’s early years.

The Legacy of GPUs for Crypto Mining

The journey of graphics cards from video gaming tech to essential blockchain mining hardware was swift and dramatic. Their general-purpose parallel processing capabilities proved ideal for cryptocurrency algorithms.

GPUs will continue playing a leading role in mining as new altcoins gain prominence and developers innovate algorithms resistant to ASIC dominance.

Their legacy is permanently intertwined with enabling decentralized participation in securing cryptocurrency networks. Despite advances, for many miners building rigs in basements and garages, humble graphics cards remain the heart of mining operations.
